It's going to be tough gaining tokens on such a beast though...

I know but i won't lose anything for try it. Smile

You can do the latter (ready an attack) - are you using "Armor Piercing strike" for the attack?

Hmmm ok, I ready the attack. The Armor Piercing seems a good movement for that attack

Unfortunately with it's feats it won't be an AoO, but a readied attack is okay.

So a ready attack using AP, SA and a good critical if possible Very Happy

Since I can't rely on the monster rolling another N1, I'm considering a suicide run to do as much damage as Shane is able before being grappled and eaten. But before I resort to such desperate tactics, is there any way Shane can keep the Helbeast from attacking him, some sort of Bluff stunt, perhaps?

There is no Bluff stunt that would draw it's attention away from you (that I can see), but a crazy Bluff-to-create-a-distraction-and-hide-underneath-the-monster's-tentacle might work, but would likely be very tough to achieve. Another option would be to find someone with the ability to draw it's attention to them (and therefore off you...). Very Happy

I think Shane would have to shout something like, "I'm going in for the kill, make sure it doesn't hit me" to one of the more impressive sailors. I would hate to discover that this thing understands people-talk in that case. Would a Knowledge (religion) (+12) check help me to know the answer?

I seem to remember that Ulgar mentioned the beast was probably controlled by a servant of Hel in the same way as that other weird creepy thing we came across. That person would definitely understand Shane. The question is more whether or not he would hear you Wink

Madfox is right, it is very likely with the Helbound sorcerer in control of the beast it would understand you if heard.

Realizing that he will not be so lucky twice, Shane charges with reckless abandon at the beast's neck.

Then there is nothing for it but to go crazy. I know Shane won't reach the sweet spot at the back of the neck, but I think this is the best I can do.

Free action Feint attempt (Bluff +16) (lowers monster's defense, grants 1d6 sneak attack).

Charge attack with the Steinn (+2 to attack, -2 to defense).

Add Child of Faith bonus for the day (another +2 to attack).

And we'll go with the Suicidal Strike defensive challenge (+6 to damage, -6 to defense). I know that I am increasing the likelihood of a critical, but there was a coinflip's chance of that happening anyway.

Total modifiers: +4 to attack, -8 to defense, +1d6 + 6 to damage, whatever penalty the Feint attempt can inflict on the Helbeast's defense.

I forget if the Steinn is a Finesse weapon or not. My base attack is +8 if it is, +6 if it isn't. So for this attack, +12 or +10.

I'm just resolving the round now Mac - remember that you can shape the Steinn into any weapon you're proficient with, so you're going to have to choose which one you want...
